Charlier Cut
The Charlier Cut or One Hand Cut is a method for cutting a deck of cards with only one hand. It is used by some card magicians as part of their act. In spite of this, it is considered a "flourish" rather than a card trick because there is no particular secret to doing it: all movements made are in free view of the spectator and there is no doubt as to how it has been performed. It is used simply as a demonstration of dexterity.
Step 1
Hold the deck of playing cards with your fingertips. Lightly hold the cards with just enough force to keep them in place.
Place your middle and ring finger along one of the long sides of the deck. Your thumb should be on the opposite long side. Put your index finger along one of the short sides and your pinky along the other short side.
Step 3
Move your thumb forward slightly to begin the charlier cut. Moving your thumb forward causes the back half of the cards to fall back into your hand. This should create a V shape.
Step 4
Use your index finger to push the back half of the cards up. Slide your index finger to the bottom of the cards and push the back half of the cards up until they are perpendicular to the other half of the cards.
Step 5
Let go of the front cards with your thumb. You'll now need to balance the front cards with your fingers. It may help to tilt your hand slightly backwards so the cards balance against the back set of cards.
Step 6
Push the back set of playing cards up with your index finger. Allow the front cards to fall down into your hand.
Push the back set of playing cards up with your index finger. Allow the front cards to fall down into your hand.
Step 7
Finish the charlier cut by merging the two sections of the playing cards. Use strong pressure from your thumb to form a tight deck
